Here we see the plaster remains over the brick mantle of the side of the chimney in the second room.
|
Here we can see the panted room ready for installation of the electrical fixtures and baseboards.
|
Here we see the back room completely done. Note how the exposed chimney and vaulted ceilings have transformed a gloomy room into an airy, welcoming space.

Here we see a historic farm house in Stanardsville, Virginia. In the two upstairs rooms the plaster is completely deteriorated. Here is a view of the fireplace and mantle in the front room in the condition we found it in. Note the closet on the left and the doorway on the right.
|
Here we see the front room chimney side with the old wall frame, doorway and closet still in place.
|
Here we see the painted front room. Now for the clean up and finish carpentry. Note the closet is gone and the doorway is now in its place.

Conversion of Slave Quarters Room
This fall we applied a fresh coat of paint to the dependencies at Highland. In addition, we are currently giving a new look to the southern room of the Slave Quarters building. Although household slaves lived in the three rooms of the Slave Quarters during Monroe's early years here, the building was later converted to guest quarters. By our converting one room to a guest room visitors can see a view of the building in both of its uses. We have applied period authentic wallpaper which was a real challenge to find. You won't find this wallpaper at your local supply store.

Ash Lawn-Highland is a historic house museum, 535-acre working farm, and performing arts site in Albermarle County; near Charlottesville, Virginia. President James Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth Kortright Monroe of New York, owned Ash Lawn-Highland from 1793 to 1826 and made it their official residence from 1799 to 1823.
Beams Painting is very proud to have been chosen for the recent restoration work that was completed at Ash Lawn-Highland. This project offered unique challenges in matching colors while restoring the buildings as closely as possible to the actual colors of the period. All work was completed while the museum continued to operate on a daily basis.
